  • ECAS: European Statistics Day 2021 statement

ESAC (European Statistical Advisory Committee) celebrates the European Statistics Day on the 20th October 2021 under the Motto

“Statistics, a vaccine to protect democracy and combat the virus of disinformation”

    ESAC Statement

The European Democracy Action Plan 2019-2024, presented by the European Commission, highlighted the need to empower citizens and build more resilient democracies across the EU.

Democracies worldwide face the proliferation, similar to that of a virus, of false or biased information that potentially has the power to quickly destabilize democratic institutions and undermine citizens’ choices and trust.

Strengthening democratic resilience means tackling disinformation by having high-quality statistical data that citizens can fully trust, which the European Statistical System produces.

High-quality statistical data, supported by statistical methodologies based on recognised scientific criteria, provide essential information to support people, businesses, and organizations in taking appropriate decisions and actions.
In the information society we live in, it is vital to confront current and future social and environmental challenges with statistics that are widely used and understood. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the high importance of being well informed and of having trustworthy and up-to-date data on which to base policy decisions to prevent the spread of the virus.

In summary, the heart of our message for European Statistics Day 2021 is the need to defeat disinformation by strengthening the production and use of high-quality statistical information with the highest standards of transparency and accountability, as a vital means of protecting freedom and democracy.

  • EOSC Future User Group

    Home

The EOSC Future project is looking for 200+ science champions to help co-design and finetune EOSC services and products.

Actors from all scientific fields are encouraged to apply online by 15 September.

EOSC Future is developing a so-called ‘system of systems’ to support European researchers in managing the entire lifecycle of data: from sharing, managing and exploiting their own data to discovering, re-using and recombining the data sets through professionally provided services. To guarantee that this cluster of products and services responds to researchers’ changing real-life needs, active user involvement is key.

That is why EOSC Future is looking for a diverse group of users and stakeholders to help co-create a trusted virtual data environment. Through the EOSC Future User Group, the project will assemble a team of “EOSC champions” from different scientific disciplines across the EU to help test and refine services and products. The User Group will rely on surveys, focus groups, or testbed sessions to validate project outputs.

    How to apply
Find out more about eligibility criteria and expected contributions on the EOSC Portal and apply by 15 September 2021.
