  • ECAS: European Statistics Day 2021 statement

ESAC (European Statistical Advisory Committee) celebrates the European Statistics Day on the 20th October 2021 under the Motto

“Statistics, a vaccine to protect democracy and combat the virus of disinformation”

    ESAC Statement

The European Democracy Action Plan 2019-2024, presented by the European Commission, highlighted the need to empower citizens and build more resilient democracies across the EU.

Democracies worldwide face the proliferation, similar to that of a virus, of false or biased information that potentially has the power to quickly destabilize democratic institutions and undermine citizens’ choices and trust.

Strengthening democratic resilience means tackling disinformation by having high-quality statistical data that citizens can fully trust, which the European Statistical System produces.

High-quality statistical data, supported by statistical methodologies based on recognised scientific criteria, provide essential information to support people, businesses, and organizations in taking appropriate decisions and actions.
In the information society we live in, it is vital to confront current and future social and environmental challenges with statistics that are widely used and understood. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the high importance of being well informed and of having trustworthy and up-to-date data on which to base policy decisions to prevent the spread of the virus.

In summary, the heart of our message for European Statistics Day 2021 is the need to defeat disinformation by strengthening the production and use of high-quality statistical information with the highest standards of transparency and accountability, as a vital means of protecting freedom and democracy.

  • EOSC Future User Group

    Home

The EOSC Future project is looking for 200+ science champions to help co-design and finetune EOSC services and products.

Actors from all scientific fields are encouraged to apply online by 15 September.

EOSC Future is developing a so-called ‘system of systems’ to support European researchers in managing the entire lifecycle of data: from sharing, managing and exploiting their own data to discovering, re-using and recombining the data sets through professionally provided services. To guarantee that this cluster of products and services responds to researchers’ changing real-life needs, active user involvement is key.

That is why EOSC Future is looking for a diverse group of users and stakeholders to help co-create a trusted virtual data environment. Through the EOSC Future User Group, the project will assemble a team of “EOSC champions” from different scientific disciplines across the EU to help test and refine services and products. The User Group will rely on surveys, focus groups, or testbed sessions to validate project outputs.

    How to apply
Find out more about eligibility criteria and expected contributions on the EOSC Portal and apply by 15 September 2021.

  • SSHOC Speech-to-text Workshop: Linking Social Survey and Linguistic Infrastructures through speech interviews [16. 4. 2021]

SSHOC (Social Sciences & Humanities Open Cloud) is organising a workshop on linking social survey and linguistic infrastructures through speech interviews.

Survey Infrastructures systematically interview tens of thousands of individuals across Europe each year. A large proportion of the information conveyed in an interview is lost if rhttps://sshopencloud.eu/espondent’s tone of voice, linguistic fluidity, and depth of vocabulary are not considered and analysed to provide insights about cognitive function, socio-economic status or verbal reasoning skills. Making use of this lost data requires the integration of social survey and linguistic infrastructures. SSHOC project seeks to provide both a proof of concept and a framework for future research of voice recorded interviews, as will be demonstrated in this webinar.

SSHOC Speech-to-text Workshop – Linking Social Survey and Linguistic Infrastructures through speech interviews will take place on 16 April, from 11:00 to 12:30 CEST

Welcome to participate anyone interested in voice recordings, storage of data, sensitive data, and social science methodology.

  • Spletno predavanje prof. dr. Christiana Genesta: A gentle introduction to copula modeling [20. 10. 2020 ob 14:15]

Vljudno vabljeni na predavanje v okviru biostatističnega centra, v torek, 20. oktobra 2020, ob 14:15 prek Zoom-a. Predaval bo prof. dr. Christian Genest iz McGill University (Kanada) na temo A gentle introduction to copula modeling.

Za razumevanje predavanj je dobrodošlo znanje diplomiranega matematika ali študenta višjih letnikov matematike.

    Napoved:
In this talk, designed for a broad mathematical audience, Dr. Genest will describe a relatively new and highly popular way of modeling multivariate data using copulas. This approach, which has found countless successful applications in areas such as finance, insurance, environmental science and the medical field over the past 30 years, is more general and flexible than traditional regression analysis or Cox’s proportional hazards model. Dr. Genest, who is widely regarded as one of the founders and most prolific contributors to copula modeling, will cover the basics of model construction, estimation, and validation using rank-based techniques. He will also outline some of the current challenges in the field.

    Ljubitelji matematike vljudno vabljeni!

  • Februarsko predavanje: Lessons learned from using Tweedie’s compound Poisson model (28. 2. 2020)

Data is rarely as straightforward as we hope or as we are usually taught. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my academic career was analyzing the data from my Master’s research. Without this challenge, I’m not sure I would have developed such an interest in statistics or data science. My Master’s research addressed a problem that may seem simple on the surface: how do we quantify a certain type of defect in the surface of wood furniture? My task was to develop a method to measure a particular phenomenon, but my advisors hadn’t envisioned any particular challenges in analyzing the data once it was collected. Apart from the data collection challenges (which will be mentioned briefly), there were several challenges with the data. First, we weren’t sure which attribute to include in our model the number of defects detected or the size of the defects (does one matter more to customers?) – we had both count data and continuous data. Second, there were a lot of zeroes in our data – the defect didn’t always occur. Third, our experiment had mixed effects – not all features were evenly distributed across all specimens (we used a blocked split-plot design). Finally, our data was not parametric, making determining both point estimates and confidence intervals challenging – the eventual solution was bootstrapping. This presentation will introduce the real-world problem (cracks in decorative veneered plywood) along with the data collection methodology (digital image correlation), the experimental design challenges, and the analytical approach taken.
